The first successful market of its kind in Newcastle ‘Red Lantern Night Market’ showcased Newcastle’s artisan community, fair trade merchants, purveyors of delicious foods, musicians and street performers and reactivated the city centre at night.

‘Red Lantern Night Market’ created a vibrant ambience where visitors to the city and Newcastle’s residents had the opportunity of viewing and purchasing unique goods direct from the artisan/maker in a exciting and engaging arena reminiscent of carnivale.Musicians played live music throughout the evening including acoustic percussion groups Samba Frog and Earthen Rhythms and acoustic performers Jack Dawson on slide guitar and Ivy Ireland on harp. There was also a busking competition organised through the conservatorium.Each evening had a continual presence of street performance including stilt walkers, fire twirlers and circus performers. Large number of the public converged to watch the performances and took part in drumming, dancing and circus skills.In 2010 ‘Red Lantern Night Market’ will build on the considerable expectation of the event returning over summer.

There will be an increase in stall numbers, a focus on emerging artisans, a broader cultural program. The market will take place on Saturday evenings this year. There will be a partnership with Livesites, which will activate an area of Hunter St with a program of ‘Dancing in the Streets’ and 'Renew Newcastle' will once again participate with openings.
