Celebrating Greta Army & Migrant Camp 1939 - 1960. Stallholders Wanted Greta is located in the Branxton area of the Hunter Valley NSW Applications are now open for new and quality products, food and drink vendors. Please email your interest to: events@centralhunterbusiness.com.au Our area has a strong military history connection – in WW1 321 men from Branxton and Greta enlisted and served our nation, some 60 men did not return and still to today some have no known graves in which families can pay respect at, no go to 1939, Greta becomes home to the largest Army Training Camp in Australia, training over 60,000 men for the 6th Division 2nd AIF. So in 2019 we celebrate the 80th Anniversary year of the Army camp that was the largest training establishment in WW2 training over 60,000 men for service in the AIF. The camp starting being built in November 1939, and received the first soldiers of the 2/11 Battalion of the 6th Division AIF on the 15 November 1939. The camp was also used to training the troops that were being trained for the Occupation Forces of Japan after the war. In 1949 the camp site was transferred to the Department of Immigration and became the home of over 100,000 migrants fleeing worn torn Europe and looking for a new home, the camp closed in 1960. The ownership of the site reverted back to Defence and was finally sold by public auction in 1980. We currently have approval to use the original camp site on camp road to host the festival – the site is some 2,930acres more than enough room to host a celebration of this scale. I current have a request in with JOCC to have Defence assets available, we plan to have a number of events over the two days as follows: **Saturday:** - Open address His Excellency the Governor of Australia General David Hurley, AC, DSC, (Retd), and The Hon J Sidoiti – Minster for Veterans and Multiculturism - Parade of vehicles troops, bands, etc. - Re-enactor displays, Fly overs of aircraft, Tiger Moth and Defence - Helicopters MRH 90 and fixed wing assets C130 Hercules throughout the day, Food and cooking displays, - Band marching playing tunes between other displays this would be from say 11am – 4.00 pm / 5.30pm - Mock battle runs with tanks and artillery, - Mass Pipes and Drums to finish the day **Sunday:** - Parade of vehicles troops, bands, etc. - Re-enactor displays - Fly overs of aircraft, Tiger Moth and Defence Helicopters MRH 90 and fixed wing assets C130 Hercules throughout the day, - Food and cooking displays, - Light Horse Display, - Band marching playing tunes between other displays this would be from say 11am – 4.00pm - Mock battle runs with tanks and artillery, - Mass Pipes and Drums to finish the day. The event is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the sacrifice and dedication of veterans and enable us to educate about a part of History regards Greta and the how the camp also became home to 100,000 migrants that called Australia home.
